Wednesday 5th June 2013

Patrick Monahan

ITV’s Show Me The Funny winner & champion hugger brings his trademark hyperactive and freewheeling charm back to Guildford. The Irish/Iranian/Geordie is a powerhouse of upbeat fun and frolics, and has been a hit at the Edinburgh Festival for nearly a decade. We sold out last time he was down, so book early!

“Without doubt a man who can do funny” – The Mirror

“Engaging and genuinely enlightening” – The Scotsman

Gareth Richards

The Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee 2010 is probably best known for his two years of co-hosting the Sony Gold Award winning Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio Show. He’s appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three) and was placed in the Top 10 of Dave’s Funniest Joke of the Edinburgh Fringe. He was also nominated for the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award, and his offbeat gags and songs make him one of the circuit’s most popular musical comics.

“A delightful hour of comedy” – The Guardian

“An effortlessly assured act… exceptionally inspired and truly memorable” – Steve Bennett, Chortle

Wednesday 19th June 2013

Christian O’Connell

A rare chance to hear from one of Britain’s leading radio voices, away from his studio desk, and not in the morning… The star of Absolute Radio’s breakfast show has eight prestigious Gold Sony Radio Awards to his name, and his voice gets millions of people out of bed every morning. Before his shows on Absolute, XFM, Fighting Talk on BBC Radio 5 Live, and TV programmes on Sky and ITV, Christian began in stand-up comedy, and now he returns to the stage for his debut Edinburgh show. See it first here.

“Everything he has to say about manliness is witty and true” – David Tennant

“I have a new hero and his name is Christian O’Connell” – The Observer

Simon Bligh

A headline comedian for two decades, Simon is a Perrier Award Nominee and former Time Out Comedy Award Winner. He works all over the UK and has toured to Australia, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Dubai, Chile, the Falkland Isles, The USA, Afghanistan, and recently he has been performing at the Comedy Store Mumbai.

On TV you may have seen him on “Friday Night Live” ITV1, “The Comedy Store” Channel 5, “Live at Jongleurs” Channel 5 or even on “The Harry Enfield Show” BBC 1 in the old days…

“A reliable pleasure, delivering well-honed, flannel free gags with a distinctive hyperactive approach” - The Guardian

“A very funny man” – Alan Davies

Wednesday 3rd July 2013

John Gordillo

A welcome return visit to The Stoke from this veteran genius of the stand-up circuit: John has been a comedian since 1996, as well as directing touring comedy shows for everyone from Eddie Izzard to Reginald D Hunter. He’s one of alternative comedy’s true masters, and is currently working on his first feature film, as well as this stand-up show: Cheap Shots At The Defenceless.

“Brilliant. Poignantly funny” – The Scotsman

“One of the UK’s best stand-ups. A truly original voice whose shows take you on a journey rich in narrative, pathos and laughs, full of characters with real depth” – The Fix

Mystery Guest:

We should clarify that this is a specific mystery guest, not just a “to be determined”! However, we’ve been asked to maintain secrecy. Regardless of who it is though a) they’ll be funny, and b) they’re sharing the bill with John Gordillo, who’s worth the ticket all by himself! Mystery Guest has excelled in the comedy world for, ooh, years now. He or she has won countless awards, as well as appearing on TV shows like that thing, you know that one, oh and that one on that channel, along with panel shows like that one you saw the other night. “Brilliant”, “Hysterical” and “Bewildering” are just three of the words that he/she knows.

“A great quote” – A newspaper

Wednesday 17th July 2013

Mark Palmer

With a comedic voice heavily influenced by the likes of Bill Cosby & Jerry Seinfeld, Mark’s ability to blend a theme or topic with one of today’s funniest comedy routines is unparalleled. Mark has been performing and honing his skills for over 9 years and he is now one of today’s most sought after comedians, and provides Good Clean Fun.

“Clean, classy, clever” - Argus Tonight

The Noise Next Door

The UK’s premier comedy improv troupe consists of five guys from Brighton, with bags of energy and a ton of punchlines for whatever you, the audience, get them to do. The Daily Telegraph called them “hilarious”, Chortle called them “sublime”, USA Weekly called them “world class”. They’re one of the most exciting acts on the circuit today, five time veterans of the Edinburgh Fringe and winners of the USA Weekly 100 Star Award.

“Pure genius” – Fringe Review

“A multi-talented behemoth of improv comedy” – Fringe Guru

Wednesday 31st July 2013

Andi Osho

Star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and Stand Up For The Week, Andi has been performing since 2003, and coupled her stand-up career with appearances as a police officer in Waking The Dead, a doctor in Footballer’s Wives and four appearances in Eastenders as a nurse (a different one each time, which technically makes her a qualified medical practitioner).

Andi is now well established as a regular contributor on TV and Radio as well as her continued live work on the stand up circuit including three live solo stand up tours.

Andi’s favourite things include shoes, her mum and cats. Not in that order… actually a little bit in that order.

“Blazing a trail” – The Telegraph

“Perfect delivery” – The Guardian

James Dowdeswell

An imaginative storytelling comedian who combines deft stand-up with daft stories, his comedy has travelled as far as Shanghai, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Australia and Singapore. Dowdeswell has recently appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC), Celebrity Deal Or No Deal (Channel 4) and Olympics Greatest Moments (BBC). He also played The Count in Ricky Gervais’ Extras. He is currently filming in his own comedy show about wine called “James Dowdeswell – Black Belt In Wine.”

“James Dowdeswell is a real master of the comedian’s craft” – Chortle

You may have noticed that we have introduced several local ales over the past few months but what you may not have noticed is that these real ales are introduced to our bar just once… then once that barrel has been drunk, it’s onto the next brew! All the ales we source are recommended by SIBA – The Society of Independent Brewers.

We want to give you the opportunity to sample lots of different types of real ale from local breweries and every month we’ll have a different selection for you to try – some you will have seen / tried before but others we hope will give you a completely fresh experience.

Rip Snorter – 5.0% abv (Hogs Back Brewery)
This is a traditional ‘strong English ale’ that can be enjoyed all year round. It is a reddish amber bitter and malty, but with refreshing hoppy high notes.

Build A Rocket Boys! – 4.0% abv (Elbow’s own brew)

Good Old Boy – 4.0% abv (The West Berkshire Brewery)
A good balance of malt and hops giving a full-bodied bitter with strong malt flavours, yet retaining a rounded bitterness and a strong hop finish

Hop Dog – 5.5% abv (Sunny Republic)
Citrus dominated IPA with a slight astringency that leads to an enduring bitter finish. Back end taste and aromas of tropical fruits.

We’ve got a cracking lineup for March! Appearing will be:

Rob Heeney:

Over the past decade, Rob Heeney has established a dual reputation as both an award-winning comedy writer and one of the top comedians on the live circuit. As a stand-up, Rob Has played all of the nation’s leading clubs including The Comedy Store, Jongleurs, Highlight, The Glee Clubs, Komedia, The Stand, The Frog & Bucket, Laughterhouse & Up the Creek. Further afield, he’s also performed in countries as diverse as the UAE, USA, the Netherlands and South Africa.

Rob’s refreshing brand of story-telling comedy blends playfulness and cynicism in equal measure. Charming and engaging, Rob’s hilarious anecdotes, and incredibly perceptive observations on modern life, address topics audiences the world over can relate to.

“The saviour of the show” – BBC Comedy
“A definite must-see” – Chortle
“Hilarious” – The Scotsman

With top-notch support from…

Tony Cowards:

Tony is a rapidfire gag merchant with an arsenal full of one-liners, for laughs-per-minute he’s a tough act to beat! His quick wit has made him a sought after act and compere by comedy clubs and promoters across the UK and even for gigs worldwide. Tony’s likable ‘everyman’ character and wide ranging humour means he is comfortable in front of any audience and is regularly booked to host comedy nights for the military (from the Irish Guards to the Royal Army Dental Corps to top brass at Norwood HQ), universities, football, rugby, golf and cricket clubs, festivals and for corporate and after dinner work.

“A beaut of a one-liner merchant” – Londonisfunny.com
“The best joke writer around” – GQ Magazine

Ben Harrington:

Ben is an established performer on the UK comedy circuit and is resident MC of Waterloo Comedy Club in London. In 2012 Ben hosted his second Edinburgh show, featuring top headline acts and rising stars from around the UK.

“Fabulous and funny” – Zine Productions

Sean McLoughlin:

Despite his relative youth and unassuming beginnings, Sean McLoughlin has managed to carve himself a spot as one of the better young acts on the circuit.

“Offers some fine laughs…Powerful stuff.” - Chortle
“Shocking, but funny.” The Newcastle Chronicle.

Compere – Taylor Glenn:

After winning the Welsh Unsigned Stand Up Award in 2010, Taylor has quickly established herself as a sought after stand up and compere on the UK and European circuit, gigging in 9 countries and venues in the UK including The Comedy Store, Glee Club, Banana Cabaret, Komedia Brighton, Baby Blue, and St. David’s Hall. With a background in improvisational theatre and sketch comedy writing and performance, Taylor is as comfortable in front of a camera as she is in front of a crowd and has written for, produced, and performed in several sketch comedy pilots and contributed to radio and various publications. She is currently working on a Channel 4 backed multimedia documentary called The Body Map and preparing an Edinburgh Fringe solo show.

“Holds a crowd with ease…humour that the audience laps up” – Buzz Magazine
“An excellent storyteller…extremely polished” – The Skinny

We’ve got a cracking line-up at You Must Be Stoking for October, including:

MARKUS BIRDMAN:

A powerhouse of energy and quality gags, Markus Birdman is a highly in-demand headline act with a wicked streak. He was a finalist in the televised BBC New Comedy Awards, and winner of the Lewisham Comedy Festival competition, as well as a finalist in The Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award 2000, Jongleur’s New Act 2000, Leicester Comedy Festival New Act 2001. A favourite at The Comedy Store both in London and in Sydney, Markus is a young, cheeky motormouth of a comic, frequently headlining the major UK comedy clubs for a premium ticket price every weekend. See him here for less!

“Uniquely talented, demonstrates just how it’s done” – The Evening Standard
“One of the millionaire mirth merchants of the future” – The Metro
“Looks like the 4th Musketeer; infectious, likable and popular with the crowd” – The Stage

TIERNAN DOUIEB:

Tiernan has been doing the stand-up thing for a little while now. In that time that he’s graced many a stage with his beardy face, playing gigs all over the UK and abroad. Douieb’s friendly manner and fast-paced gags have made him a highly sought after compere and act on the circuit. He has done a lot of work for the Comedy Club 4 Kids, which is a stand-up show for 6-11 year olds, invented by James Campbell. Tiernan rather enjoys these as its one of the few times the audience are on the same intellectual level as him.

“I would challenge anyone not to warm to Tiernan’s boyish enthusiasm. He has an easy rapport with
the audience and his gags provided plenty of laughs for the sell out crowd” – One4Review.com
“Clearly a natural comic…an inherently funny person” – AllTheFestivals.net
“Uplifting and light hearted…Douieb was energetic, fast paced and his humour was full of kitsch
appeal” – BBC

KATIE MULGREW:

Finalist in the Funny Women competition 2007, Katie has got funny bones. Young, bubbly, and always a likeable stage presence, Katie’s making big waves on the Manchester comedy scene. That’s right – there are places in the North beyond Woking.

WILL DUGGAN:

After just 3 short years on the comedy circuit, Will’s a name to watch. With cracking one-liners and an enviable set, Will’s known for a great stage presence and a great rapport with the audience.

Compère: NEIL COLE:

TV presenter, comedian, actor, one-half of Hitchcock’s Half Hour, Neil Cole is the lot. He won the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition, and established the sketch troupe Pros From Dover. He’s supported Russell Brand on his UK tour, presented TV coverage from the World Rally Championships and the MTV Music Awards, and above all, he’s a fine comedian.

Line-ups may change, so please contact The Stoke on 01483 504296 or check www.youmustbestoking.com for the latest listings.

Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:00pm.

Tickets are £8 (+ 80p booking fee) in advance from www.youmustbestoking.com/tickets,, or £10 on the door.

Our first regular monthly show back after our great run of Edinburgh previews and a short summer break. And what a line-up…

ROGER MONKHOUSE:

Roger Monkhouse is one of the most original and distinctive acts on the comedy scene. Recent television credits include “The Comedy Store” and “The World Stands Up”, (both Paramount), “My God I’m My Dad” (Bravo) and “Street Cred Sudoku” (UKG2). He is one of the regular writers on Channel 4′s “8 Out of 10 Cats”. Roger is a regular member of the prestigious and critically acclaimed “Cutting Edge” team at the London Comedy Store.

“Packs in more observations on the human condition in a twenty minute set than a whole lecture on Jean-Paul Sartre” – Venue Magazine

Also appearing will be:

JESS FOSTEKEW:

Jess has been performing improvised comedy and working as a comedy writer and actress since 2005.
“Expect her career to accelerate into the fast lane” – Metro

“Fostekew is a hugely engaging presence and there’s something reassuringly honest about her” – Fest

LIAM WILLIAMS:

Liam is a former Cambridge Footlights member and runner-up in So You Think You’re Funny 2010, making big waves on the UK comedy scene.
WILL SCAMBLER:

Alumnus of the Chortle Student Comedy Award Final 2009, Will’s a lawyer turned comedian. He’s a bit posh, but then we’re in Guildford, so he should fit in fine.
